You may say I'm a dreamer...

...but I'm not the only one. Some people say they never dream when they sleep, and I've read that isn't true: Everyone dreams many times every night (the average dream lasting only 3-5 seconds) but we remember so few (or none) of our dreams because they're sent straight to our short-term memories. Unless you do something like write the dream down or share it with a friend to transfer the information to your long-term memory, that dream is gone and you may never remember having it at all.

I've done a lot of thinking and even a little writing about dreams over the years--what dreams mean, why I always have the same ones, how to avoid really scary ones...I wonder if this is a topic that is interesting to you? I've heard that it's really fun for us to talk about our own dreams but it isn't all that fun for everyone else listening?  I'm not sure anyone really wants to know about my recent dream regarding my neighbor in the buff drinking coffee in his backyard or the one where I'm sorting through tornado rubble in only a towel.  :)

I have a couple of recurring dreams, meaning dreams I have had several times throughout my lifetime, and I have to say they are mostly bad, or at least very uncomfortable. I often dream that I am still in high school and I have a volleyball game or track meet to go to and I'm not ready. I've either forgotten my uniform or shoes or I can't remember going to any practices beforehand to train. I haven't played high school sports for 20 years...why would this keep showing up in my subconscious?  Another dream I've had a lot (although not in quite a while, now that I think of it) is that my teeth are really chalky and they're crumbling out of my mouth, or they're all loose and if you tapped one they'd all fall out in a sort of domino effect.

I've read that you're likely to have nightmares if the room you are sleeping in is very warm and if you sleep with your arms above your head...I wonder what conditions make for more pleasant dreams? Do you think that what you have in your head right before you fall asleep will come out in your dreams, or do the littlest things from earlier in the day somehow pop up? Do you think you can control your dreams? I have a friend who is into "astratravel," which is, very simply, being able to will yourself to go places in your dreams. She said she could think about checking in on her cousin before she fell asleep and then she'd dream something about her cousin that would let her know how she was doing. She also told me that if you ever see yourself in your dreams, like you're looking down at yourself from above (in video games isn't that the third-person view?) instead of seeing the dream through your own eyes (like first-person in video games?) that you have astratraveled without even trying. Interesting...

There are various books and websites that offer interpretations of dreams and the elements involved.  You may or may not find these valid, but you considering dreams and what they might be saying could probably spark numerous writing ideas.  Take a look at some of these and see what you think:  Dream Dictionary    Dream Bible   Psychologists World

I hope you've also done some thinking about how dreaming can play into the writing process. Please post a brief but thoughtful comment on this post answering one or more of the following:

...a recurring dream you have
...the worst dream you've ever had
...the best dream you've ever had (PG-13 or tamer :) )
...what you think causes dreams
...books you've read about dreams or dreaming
...if you think dreams are symbolic or have deeper meaning
...what you found in the dream interpretation books
...if you think astratravel or lucid dreaming is possible
...your daydreams or your dream day chart
...your dreams for your future
...if you think dreams could inspire writing for you
...something else connected to dreams?

  1. I tend to day dream a lot through out my day, just because I'm either really bored or I kind of just drift off. I even can do it while I'm in the middle of a conversation

  2. The worst dreams I have are when I know I'm dreaming but I can't wake myself up.

  3. I think dreams are caused by our subconscious running free while we're asleep because we aren't awake to control our minds from going wherever it wants to. I've seen the movie Inception a lot and it makes me think that dreams might be able to reveal things about us like our fears and secrets. I don't really like the conversation about reality when it comes to dreaming because that freaks me out but I do think that our dreams are based on things that we thought about that day or things we happened to be thinking about right before we fell asleep. Sometimes if I remember what my dream was about that night I can connect it to a conversation I had with a friend that day or something I saw on social media or something like that.

  4. what you think causes dreams?
I think when you dream, is when your remembering moments you had from awhile ago or the things you seen also whats been on your mind when going to bed.

  5. When I was four years old, I had a dream that the world was exploding street by street. A rhinoceros skull landed in my lap, pinning me down to my top bunk. My clothes were scattered all over the floor, so I tried to roll it off, but it wouldn't budge. I tried yelling for my mom and dad to get themselves downstairs so they wouldn't get hurt, but they couldn't hear me over their episode of Family Guy. It was a loud yet quiet TV playing one second, then silence. My hair was singed, and I lay amidst the mountain of clothes. As I did so, I realized that my parents weren't coming to check on me. I felt a gust of wind through the gaping holes in my clothes. I walked around, hoping that they were okay. When I didn't see them, I began to cry.

Some nights when I have this dream, I will scream aloud and cry. I am unable to wake up on my own, and it takes my parents shaking me or putting a cat on my face to wake me up. All I think about afterwards is how dirty my room is, I should really clean it, and Why should I let this hold me back?

  6. I think dreams can inspire writing for me, for sure. It's interesting to see what other people dream and what they think about at night. It can lead to hundreds of stories with thousands of different endings.

  7. A recurring dream I have is driving down the highway and losing control of my car. Sometimes it's the car at fault and sometimes it's just me letting go of the steering wheel.
The worst dream I've had was a dream where my dad just disappeared without a trace.
The best dream I've had was just me with my dream job living my life.
I think dreams are made by the brain to keep it stimulated and alert.
I've read a few Psychology books on dreams, but I don't remember the name of them.
I don't think dreams hold any deep meaning personally.
I found that most of my dreams are causes of extreme distrust according to them.
Lucid dreaming is possible. I've done it once. It was amazing.
I daydream a lot, mostly imagining stories I've made up.
I dream of just holding a stable job and maintaining my hobbies.
Dreams inspire most of my writing.
I dreamed about my parent's divorce the night before it happened. Fun stuff. :v

  9. I've read a theory that dreaming is our mind conjuring different scenarios to prepare us in the event we run into the same situation when we're awake. I think that having our subconscious minds run us through terrifying scenarios in a vain attempt to give us a non lethal attempt at solving them is morbid, but makes a twisted sort of sense? Though, I can safely say that I don't remember learning anything from my dreams.

  10. I can only recall having one dream thats repeated itself. The crazy thing is the second time i got this dream i was sleeping in the same room on the same bed at my grandparents house. Maybe that room is connected to the dream some how? So in this dream i'm with my family and we are stopped at a gas station, when all of a sudden an alien invasion begins and we start flooring it out of the gas station, then i wake up.
