Angelou: Writers Dreaming

Thank you for taking the time to consider author Maya Angelou's ideas about how dreams play into the writing process. Please do a New Post on your blog  with your answers to 4-6 of the questions on the blue handout I gave you. Your post should be a decent length (500 words) if you've provided thoughtful answers. Title the post Writers Dreaming.  Also include an image (of Maya, of something connected to dreaming or an aspect of one of your answers) on this post.

If you're interested in learning more about Maya Angelou, her interesting life and her beloved works, you can start at her official website. I  bought this t-shirt showcasing her autobiography (one of my favorite books) I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings from a little store downtown next to Maria's called 5# Apparel. Most of the proceeds the store nets are donated to charities around the world. You can also find the t-shirt and others featuring classic, challenged books (ones that have been put on banned books lists at one time or another) at Out of Print. Click the "Shop" link to get to the t-shirts--the site donates a book to Books for Africa for every purchase made. I'd like to do some thinking next week about books that have made a difference to us as people and as writers, and I wonder if you've read any of the classics featured on their other shirts...

I love that several of you have mentioned you "dream" of becoming professional writers. Leave a comment here telling us why you'd like/not like to be a professional writer and/or what kind of writing you see yourself doing.

Stephenie Meyer said on Oprah that she always heard that was an unrealistic, financially hopeless goal, but I hope that no matter what anyone says, if that's your dream, you go for it. Seems like you'd regret not trying more than you'd regret taking a shot at it...

  1. I love writing, and if there were a special category for "fanfiction", there would be absolutely no issue with pursuing a career. However, I have extreme difficulty coming up with original stories-- they always veer towards one of my favourite fandoms. It's hard.

  2. I love to write about political and philosophical issues but I find the profession to be tedious and time consuming which is likely why I would not enjoy being a writer.

  3. I'd love to be a professional writer, I'd probably like to write sci-fi and fantasy, and be a columnist for a paper.

  4. Honestly, I personally would not like to be a professional writer. While my imagination is rather wild I struggle to translate those thoughts into words and I'm fairly inconsistent in my level of success there.
If I did write professionally, I would probably do fiction writing as it's far more flexible than non fiction writing.

  5. I'm not sure if I would like to write for a living because I get really impatient with myself and I don't think that I could wait several years to finish a work and then get it published. If I ever did end up writing anything, it would be more of an autobiography (if I do anything note-worthy in my adult life). I think it would also be cool to start a new periodical or magazine about global healthcare and other humanitarian issues.

  6. I like writing, but I would not want to do it as a career. Nothing would ever get finished because I always change my topics and can never stick to one idea. If I were to write I would probably write stories inspired by my experiences.

  7. I would love to express my dreams in writing. Dreams never make sense but you can get so many ideas. If I was a writer I would like to also be into Sci-Fi.

  9. Writing for a living would be a dream come true. To escape into a world all your own and have hundreds of other people wanting more is something so great that it almost seems impossible. I'd want to write fiction; I'm figuring out what genre I write best in at the moment. But so far it seems I'm leaning towards sci-fi stuff.

  10. I would not be a professional writer, there are many reasons why I wouldn't. The first reason why I wouldn't be a professional writer is that it would be too much, cause people will constantly want to know what your thinking of all the time. my second reason is that, it would be too much writing in my part, i'm not a fan of writing long stories.
